The school grounds group recently submitted two fantastic entries to the RBS dream playground competition.  RBS with Learning through Landscapes,  the national school grounds charity,  is running a national competition to find the UKs most deserving primary school,  with a top prize of £100,000 to improve their playground.

February 2008: Sadly, were not shortlisted for the competition but we are very proud of the entries submitted!

Here are the two entries nominating Brynmill School for this award:

Our school yard – the faded rainbow.

Mrs Sarah Roach and Miss Sarah Morgan

Brynmill School is stimulating, full of excitement and exploration.

Inside there are vibrant classrooms – but outside there is a cheerless place.

We imagine the colours of a faded rainbow which has become dull and dark.

Grey is for our stark, concrete jungle.

Orange is for the rust on the groaning school gate.

Red is for the blood on our knees if we fall.

Green is for the mould that lurks near slimy drains.

Purple is for the bruises on our sore, scraped skin.

Black is for the grime that clings to the old school walls.

Brown is for the mud-bed that longs for some life

Blue is for the way we feel when we go outside.

Yellow is for the sun that beats down on our lifeless yard.

How we dream of something better, somewhere to laugh and learn and play.

We long for a brighter rainbow.

Grey is for the gleaming metal bikes and scooters.

Orange is for the cheerful geraniums crammed into decorated planters.

Red is for the plump tomatoes harvested with proud hands.

Green is for the trees pleasantly shading us on sunny days.

Purple is for the spring violas bursting from hanging baskets.

Black is for the sturdy tyres where we can swing, bounce and jump.

Brown is for the soft bark chippings – somewhere safe to land.

Blue is for the brightly coloured benches where we chat and read.

Yellow is for the sun that smiles down on happy children.

And this by Sharon White:

Brynmill School is just the best,
But one thing's spoiling all the rest.
The trouble with our little yard
Is when we trip the ground's so hard.
Sometimes we run and jump up high,
But fall and hurt our knees and cry
And then our cuts get really sore.
We wish we had a softer floor.
It's not much fun to play outside
Without a sand pit or a slide.
Our playground is so bleak and bare
Which doesn't mean that we don't care.
We'd really like to have some trees,
Instead of grazes on our knees.
I'm sure our troubles all would pass
If only we had sand or grass.
Perhaps some painted walls or flowers
Where we could spend some happy hours.
A little place to play our games,
A modern yard with climbing frames?
A little place where if we fall
We will not hurt ourselves at all.
But who would pay for things like these?
If only money grew on trees.
Our teacher says we need to save
And then things may not look so grave.
But surely that would take too long
With all our pocket money gone.
So fingers crossed, we'll get to thank
That marvellous Royal Scottish Bank.
